SN 2006gy: discovery of the most luminous ever observed in NGC 1260 spiral galaxy...

by gma — 2007-07-09 13:01

Reaching the glare of 50 billion sun (absolute magnitude of -22), this supernova is not a classic one which explodes during a few days and ends in black hole. Its explosion spent 70 days to reach its apogee (the glare reached 5 times the intensity ever observed). More than 5 months after the first observation, it still preserves the glare of a supernova. That would confirm the theory according to which in the middle of this one of the super-powerful gamma rays would generate pairs electron-positrons which would be destroyed causing a gigantic explosion… Located at 238 million light-years (72 megaparsec), this star known as hyper-massive has a mass of 140-250 times that of the sun (M⊙) and is in galaxy NGC 1260. The star exploded very much like a Population III star (the first stars to condense after the Big Bang, and were composed of only hydrogen and helium, virtually no heavier elements at all).

4 billions years old, this planet looks similar to the Earth : surface temperatures is about 0°C-40°C suitable for human life despite of its gravity (2.5g with a 2.2 Earth weight). The planet is close at 20.5 light year. A Gliese 581c year last 13 Earth days.
